CiCi Foster has mastered multi-tasking as an accomplished author, actress and entrepreneur. After graduating from college, the Chicago native moved to Los Angeles, California and found success in independent films and national commercials. Observing the hardships many actresses have trying to establish themselves in Los Angeles, Foster created the documentary, “I Heart Hollywood”. In addition, Foster is currently working on her second novel, “Hollywoodn’t” after releasing her critically acclaimed debut novel, “Sunny Rain”. In the midst of working on a new play and a slate of new projects for her production company, Flower Goddess Productions, Foster talks to AimerAmour about her book, documentary and provides advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.
AimerAmour: What situations inspired your documentary?
CiCi Foster: “I Heart Hollywood” follows the lives of 14 actresses in Los Angeles and it gives people a real insight of what its really like to be an actress in LA because a lot of people have the misconception that it’s an easy profession to get into. You can’t imagine the number of people that have told me, ‘Just call Tyler Perry, he’s doing great things, he can help you.’ If it were that easy, every one would be an actress. Its not easy, nor is it inexpensive. The documentary addresses the financial burdens of being an actress; from getting head shots to taking acting classes, it all adds up. We follow these ladies to auditions, meetings with acting coaches, fittings-we really get an idea of the struggle that it is being an actress in LA with all of the other actresses in this town vying for the same roles.
AA: What’s the plot of your novel Sunny Rain?
CF: Sunny Rain is a book that I’ve been working on for quite sometime. It started off as a short story until my husband suggested I make it into a novel and publish it. It’s about three social workers that are best friends. Every woman in the book has several issues that they are struggling to overcome. Natalie, the main character, has a very traumatic past that no one knows about and she works hard to bury it but that past comes out and it causes her too make several bad decisions. She’s married but lonely. Her husband works late nights and is never home. He thinks showering her with gifts is enough to make their marriage last. Natalie winds up having an affair with a guy that’s had numerous affairs before and she learns a lot about herself through the process. The second character, Leslie, is the wild and crazy friend of the group that’s single and loving it. She has men everywhere and that’s how she masks her true inner loneliness by surrounding herself with lots of guys. Throughout the book she finds a guy who she believes is the one but he has his own baggage. The final character, Monica is very sexually repressed. She has a childhood scar that left her with very low self-esteem. She’s working towards gaining self-esteem while being hell bent on winning back the love of her ex-boyfriend. However, she’ll soon find out that things aren’t what they appear to be and you have to be careful about what you ask for. These women go through traumatic experiences but they have each other and the bonds of their friendship.
AA: Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.
CF: When you have a vision, you have to have a plan to direct yourself to your destination. Before you embark on a new endeavor, you have to ask yourself if you’re really ready for the hard work. You know yourself better than anyone else so you know if you’re really the entrepreneur type. If you don’t work well independently and you’ll procrastinate things that need to get things accomplished, then you’re probably best working for someone else because you have a lot of freedom as an entrepreneur. You have a lot of time on your hands to either be disciplined and get things done or be stagnate. I always advise people to be realistic about their goals. If you’re sure that you want your own business, go for it and don’t let anything stop you but be aware of all the work being an entrepreneur entails.
